LOLbnb Chronicles #2: The Dwarfs Check In
Checking into LOLbnb

If there is one thing the management of LOLbnb has learned over the years, it is this: Guests rarely arrive quietly. Some arrive confused. Some arrive exhausted. A few arrive after long philosophical arguments with Google Maps. But occasionally, a pair arrives in a way that immediately lifts the entire building’s mood. This particular morning began with two suitcases rolling across the lobby floor and two voices laughing so loudly that even the coffee machine paused respectfully for a moment. The owners of those voices were Percy and Alfie.

The check in @ LOLbnb

The Arrival Percy and Alfie entered LOLbnb like men who had already decided the trip was going to be excellent before the taxi had even stopped. Percy, with a magnificent ginger beard and a laugh that arrived half a second before any sentence, pulled his suitcase through the lobby like a victorious explorer returning from the Arctic. Alfie followed closely behind, equally cheerful, wearing the expression of someone who believed that the universe had arranged this trip personally for him. The moment they reached the reception desk, Percy raised his hand dramatically. “Alfie,” he said. Alfie raised his hand as well. And with the solemn dignity normally reserved for astronauts returning from space, the two performed a perfectly timed high-five. The sound echoed across the lobby. The receptionist looked up. The bellboy grinned. The security guard nodded approvingly. Even the decorative plant near the entrance seemed slightly more optimistic. Meet the Receptionist Behind the desk stood Clara, the senior receptionist of LOLbnb. Clara had been working at the hotel long enough to know three important truths: 1. No guest ever understands the Wi-Fi instructions the first time. 2. The lift always stops at the wrong floor for someone. 3. Happy guests are contagious. Clara greeted them with the calm professionalism of someone who had once checked in a family of twelve who believed they had booked an entire castle. “Welcome to LOLbnb,” she said. Percy leaned forward slightly. “We already love it.” Clara smiled. This was an excellent start. The Staff Committee of Curiosity Behind Percy and Alfie, a small audience had quietly assembled. George, the retired railway conductor who stayed at LOLbnb for two months every year “just for the breakfasts,” leaned against the wall watching with interest. Officer Ben, the security supervisor, stood nearby pretending to inspect the fire extinguisher while clearly enjoying the moment. And Marcus, the doorman in the elegant red uniform, had developed a personal rule: If guests arrive laughing, it is best not to interrupt the momentum. The Check-In Process Clara began typing. “Two nights?” she asked. “Possibly three,” Alfie said. “Possibly four,” Percy added. “We haven't yet checked the breakfast schedule.” This was considered a very sensible approach. Clara handed them their key cards. “Room 214. Breakfast begins at 7:30.” Percy turned to Alfie again. “Did you hear that?” Alfie nodded solemnly. “Civilization still exists.” The Breakfast Discovery

At breakfast, LOLbnb

The following morning, Percy and Alfie entered the dining hall with the enthusiasm of explorers discovering a fertile new continent. The LOLbnb breakfast hall was already lively. Families chatted at tables. Children negotiated complex pancake treaties. A golden retriever sat politely beside its owner with the quiet dignity of someone who clearly believed the bacon belonged to him. Percy and Alfie sat down. Two coffees arrived. Three glasses of orange juice followed. Plates of eggs, toast, beans, and various other breakfast items began appearing with cheerful efficiency. After a moment of thoughtful chewing, Percy leaned back. “This,” he said, “is the best decision we have made all year.” A woman at the next table laughed. George the railway conductor raised his coffee in agreement. Breakfast at LOLbnb had once again succeeded in bringing together strangers who would soon become temporary friends. The Indoor Games Room

Later that afternoon, Percy and Alfie discovered one of the hotel's most dangerous features: The Games Room. The room contained: Chess boards Card tables Ping-pong Carrom boards Video games And a television permanently tuned to something involving sports analysis This was, naturally, irresistible. Percy sat down at a chess board. Alfie sat opposite him. A crowd slowly gathered. Children paused their video game tournament. Two elderly guests stopped mid-conversation. Marcus the doorman appeared with what he described as “strategic coffee.” The match lasted twenty-seven minutes. It included: Three dramatic blunders One accidental knight sacrifice And a queen that appeared to wander around the board like a tourist Finally Alfie leaned back. “Checkmate.” Percy stared at the board. He nodded slowly. “Well played.” Then he smiled. “Best two out of three?” A Selfie for History

Before dinner, Percy and Alfie stepped outside the building. The red brick façade of LOLbnb glowed warmly in the evening light. The café below buzzed with activity. Someone was playing music nearby. Percy held up his phone. The two leaned together, laughing again. Click. Somewhere in the background, the LOLbnb sign smiled quietly over the moment. A Note from the Management At LOLbnb we have learned something important. People arrive from different places. Different jobs. Different lives. Different worries. But occasionally two friends walk through the doors already laughing. And when that happens, the entire building joins them. Welcome to LOLbnb. You may arrive by accident. But the laughter tends to stay.
