Mudhal Tiruvandādi — Poigai Āzhvār (Pāsurams 11–20)
(Tamil text follows the traditional Srirangam recitational version used in devotional contexts; minor textual variants may exist across manuscripts.) அன்பே தகளியாய் ஆர்வமே நெய்யாக இன்புருகி சிந்தை இடு திரியாக நன்புருகி ஞானச் சுடர் விளக்கு ஏற்றினேன் நாரணனுக்கு ஞானத் தமிழ் புரிந்தேன். In this verse, Poigai Āzhvār deepens the imagery of the lamp. Love itself becomes the lamp, devotion the oil, melting joy the wick, and awakened consciousness the flame. The meaning is intimate and powerful: true worship does not require objects, but inner transformation. When love melts the heart, wisdom lights itself naturally. For the modern seeker, this verse reminds us that spirituality is not something we add to life; it is something we become when the heart softens. எண்ணிலா பேரொளி எம்மை ஆளுடையாய் தண்ணிலா வானத்து அமுதமாய் நின்றாய் விண்ணினும் மண்ணினும் வேறாகி நின்றாய் உன்னை அறிந்தேன் எனக்கு நீயே. Here the Āzhvār declares recognition. He sees the Lord as boundless light, present beyond heaven and earth, yet intimately ruling his inner life. The devotional message is assurance. Even when life feels divided between worldly duties and spiritual longing, the Divine quietly pervades both. Recognition itself becomes liberation. நீயே உலகெல்லாம் நின்னுள் அடங்க நீயே உயிர்க்கு உயிராய் நின்றாய் நீயே அறம் பொருள் இன்பமாய் நின்றாய் நீயே எனக்கு எல்லாம் ஆனாய். This pāsuram affirms total surrender. The Lord is not one among many supports; He is the foundation of everything—ethics, meaning, joy, and life-force itself. In human terms, this verse calms existential anxiety. When life feels fragmented, the soul is reminded that wholeness already exists in the Divine presence that holds everything together. மறந்தறியேன் உன்னை மற்றொன்றும் வேண்டேன் திறம்பட உன் அருள் சிந்தித் திருப்பேன் இறந்தறியேன் என்றே இருந்தேன் ஆனால் பிறந்தறியேன் உன் பேர் கேட்ட பின்னே. Poigai Āzhvār speaks of transformation through remembrance. Hearing the Lord’s name changes his very understanding of life and death. This is not denial of mortality, but transcendence of fear. For modern life filled with uncertainty, this verse reassures us that spiritual anchoring reshapes how we face impermanence. உள்ளம் உனதே உடல் உனதே என்னை வள்ளல் நீ கொண்டாய் வாழ்வினை உன்னால் கள்ளம் இன்றி உன்னை காதலித்தேன் தெள்ளியேன் ஆயினேன் தெரிந்து கொண்டேன். Here the Āzhvār speaks of clarity born of love without deception. Loving God without expectation purifies the mind. The contemporary echo is strong: when intentions become clean, confusion dissolves. Spiritual clarity is not intellectual complexity but emotional honesty. உன்னை நினைந்தால் உள்ளம் இனிக்கின்றேன் என்னை நினைத்தாய் என்றே உணர்கின்றேன் மன்னு புகழ் உன் பேர் வாழ்க என்றேன் என்னை விடுவாய் என்றே நம்புகின்றேன். This verse expresses mutual remembrance. The devotee remembers God, and feels remembered in return. It reassures anyone who feels unseen or forgotten. Devotion is not a one-sided effort; it is a living relationship sustained by grace. அறியேன் அறிவு அளவில்லாதாய் கறியேன் களவு இன்றி கண்டுகொண்டேன் செறிவே உன் திருவடி சேர்ந்த பின்னே பிறிவே எனக்கு இல்லை என்றேன். Here Poigai Āzhvār accepts the limits of human knowledge and chooses surrender over struggle. Once the heart reaches the Divine feet, separation disappears. The emotional teaching is simple: peace arrives not when everything is understood, but when trust is complete. உலகம் உண்டாய் உலகம் அளித்தாய் உலகம் உகந்தாய் உலகம் ஆனாய் உலகம் காத்தாய் உலகம் நீயே உலகம் எனக்கு இனி நீயே. This pāsuram is cosmic in scope. The Lord is creator, sustainer, and essence of the world. For the reader today, it reframes daily life as sacred. Work, struggle, joy, and rest all occur within divine embrace. கண்ணனே என் கரு மாணிக்கமே வண்ணமே உன் பேர் வாழ்க என்றேன் எண்ணமே உன்னை தவிர வேறில்லை திண்ணமே என் உயிர் நீயே என்றேன். Here devotion becomes personal and affectionate. The Lord is addressed as precious jewel, beloved presence. This verse reminds us that spirituality need not be distant or severe; intimacy is also sacred. இவ்வுலகில் இனி எனக்கு பயமில்லை அவ்வுலகில் அடியேன் ஆசை இல்லை எவ்வுலகும் உன் அருளால் நிற்க கண்டேன் செவ்வுலகே எனக்கு இனி எல்லாம் ஆனாய். The final pāsuram in this set closes with fearlessness. When divine grace is recognized everywhere, anxiety dissolves. This is the gift Poigai Āzhvār offers: not escape from life, but courage within it. The world becomes bearable, meaningful, even beautiful, when seen through grace. These ten pāsurams continue the lighting of the first lamp of the Divya Prabandham. Poigai Āzhvār gently teaches that love is worship, surrender is strength, and remembrance is protection. The path begins not with effort, but with trust.
